Details of the offer

We are looking for a Financial Modeling Consultant for a potential opportunity in Kano State.About TechnoServe: TechnoServe works with enterprising women and men in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries. We are a non-profit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital, and markets. With five decades of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.Founded over 50 years ago, TechnoServe has been named the #1 nonprofit for fighting poverty by the ImpactMatters charity ratings agency. Background and Project Purpose:Tomatoes account for 20 percent of Nigerians’ daily fruit and vegetable consumption, and the country has the second largest tomato production volume in Africa. Nigeria produces 1.8 million metric tons (MT) of tomatoes per annum, against the demand of 2.3 million MT per annum. While there is opportunity for local production to meet demand, approximately 45 percent of tomato production is lost before reaching consumers, resulting in supply gaps, wasted nutritious food, and lower incomes for tomato smallholder farmers. Mechanisms to reduce post-harvest loss, such as increased local processing of fresh tomato and the use of reusable plastic crates (RPCs) for tomato transport and provide a significant opportunity to reduce waste, drive increased incomes for smallholder farmers, and develop SMEs along the value chain. In particular, expanding cottage and small-scale processing in the north provides an opportunity to significantly reduce post-harvest loss, support stable local demand for fresh tomato, and increase value capture in the region, especially for women. While in the past TechnoServe has demonstrated that with technical assistance and subsidies for equipment procurement, cottage processors can achieve profitability, additional, detailed financial analysis is needed to create a clear business case for increased investment in cottage tomato processing.Consultant’s Role:The objective of the proposed consultancy is to conduct a rigorous assessment of cottage tomato processors in Northern Nigeria to determine whether there is a business case for commercial investment in the sector. The project will also assess the potential impact of local sourcing and processing of tomatoes on the smallholder farmer.A consultant will support this effort by conducting: A detailed profit and loss analysis for a typical cottage processor over the span of 5 yearsA break-even analysis of the costs of establishing a tomato processing businessAn overview of market demand and competing tomato paste productsAn assessment of smallholder farmer tomato sales options and processor’s tomato sourcing modelsAn analysis of the investment and assistance (from the public sector or private sector) needed to support cottage tomato processing Northern Nigeria The consultant will be supported by a Project Manager and work with TechnoServe staff in Nigeria and the local donor staff. Contact with local TechnoServe and donor staff will be critical to align efforts, connect stakeholders, and prioritize investments.DeliverablesGiven the amount of local research and the practical realities of gathering high quality information, this project will take an estimated 14 weeks to complete. The table below outlines the project timeline and key deliverables for the consultant. Phase Deliverable Timeline Mobilization Detailed work plan and confirmation of deliverables Week 2 Draft Interim Deliverable Review critical interim deliverables including overall market data and segmentation, processor, and farmer scenarios, critical challenges in status quo, and filter process to go from longlist to shortlist of investments.
